Back in the early 90’s when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was screened on TV our Will Smith started getting noticed as a Will Smith Lookalike.
Will Smith was a young, fresh and funny character that appealed to all ages, which is what made him so successful. Our Will Smith was probably around thirteen or fourteen at the time and was making his way to West London. When boarding a train two girls walked passed and cheekily shouted “Fresh Prince” and ran off. He had no idea what they meant. However, little did he know that that comment was about to change the rest of his life.
Around the same time his girlfriend’s mother and family used to continually compare him as a Lookalike of the ‘Fresh Prince’, but being young and naive he always brushed the comments aside not knowing what the future held.
He was being compared as a Will Smith Lookalike and even called Will on a daily basis when one evening in early 1999 he was attending a charity event which was held in a classy pub. The night was a Karaoke night so imagine a bustling bar, on a Friday night full of look a likes and tipsy workers all finished work for the week.
They were all trying to sing countless Robbie William’s tracks in there own out of tune kind of way and who was standing next to the microphone? You guessed it – our Will Smith Lookalike “Go on Will give us a song” they all shouted as the glasses waved in the air. Miami – nana na na nana “get jiggy with it ” they sang. Being persuaded and waved on, with a slight elbow in the back from his fellow lookalikes, he nervously approached the small stage.
There he stood and his heart skipped a beat as the DJ lined up Miami. He looked up at the screen, knew all the words but the nerves had blocked that line to his brain, the sweat poured down his face. Nervously he began to sing and move like Will Smith. The crowd were loving it, he felt the vibe and began to get more confident a little wiggle here, there and styled it out as a Will Lookalike. The pub was now feeding off his energy and he was in control.
